A Squidoo lens is composed of a
series of vertical sections called modules. Shown in the
image to the right is a the blank template screen
representing a newly defined lens. "Squidoo Modules" is the
title, and four empty modules are shown below that. They are
the Introduction, RSS, Text/Write, and
Amazon modules. Each one has different qualities and
is intended to be used for different things.
Introduction - This is meant to be your opening
module. You should consider a keyword tie-in in its title.
The text in this module will be used in the webpage's "meta
description" and should not be excessively long.
RSS
- Using this module, you can add RSS (Really Simple
Syndication) feeds to your lens. This allows you to list
item headlines generated by outside sites such as news hubs
and blogs. Because RSS feeds are updated depending on their
source's publication schedule, your RSS module will be
updated as often as the feed is. An RSS module is a good way
to keep fresh content automatically included in your lens.
Text/Write - This is the type of module you will
likely use most. It has the fewest restrictions on format
and is meant to be used for the "meat" of your message. You
will probably have multiple Text/Write modules, dividing
your lens content into sections.
Amazon - Squidoo provides preformatted modules
for a variety of affiliate websites. These are designed to
help you sell items from those sites. Affiliate modules
include Amazon, eBay, Orbitz, Cafepress, and NetFlix.
Royalties are paid basically 50/50, split between you and
Squidoo.
Flickr - Easy support
allowing display of images from Flickr in your lens.
There are over 100 types of
modules that are available for use in your lens. You select
them for inclusion using the Add Modules button at the top
of your page. That takes you to the Module Picker as seen to
the right. Modules are grouped in tabs that appear across
the top of the form. You can learn something about each
module by hovering over its name with your mouse. Click
Add to include it in your
lens.
Unwanted modules can be
removed from your lens by clicking the circled X button (to
the right of the Edit button) associated with it.
This link to an external website lists the available
module types.
